fish pantoum

religion means a willingness to be a fish,
to be fished for in holy waters,
to bow the head & take hints from one’s dreams,
to eat grief as the fish gulps water and lives.

to be fished for in holy waters,
being both the fish and the fisher,
to eat grief as the fish gulps water and lives.
Being a fish is to be active with soul

I dreamt I was the fish and the fisher,
the son of a poet slept in a small pond of water
from it a fish floated in the air, active with soul
he rose from the goldfish swimming in the bed

the son of a poet slept in a small pond of water,
I took him out walking in the snow,
he rose from the goldfish swimming in the bed.
The poet’s son fell into the snow, & I said it’s ok

I took him out walking in the snow
we went to sit under a tank full of trout
the poet son fell into the snow, & I said it’s ok,
the fish looking into us, moving their mouths

We went to sit under a tank full of bass,
red glow & spots drifting by,
the fish looking into us, moving their mouths.
We were that dragon scaled goldfish shimmer

Red glow & spots drifting by,
we were that black floating jelly fish serpent,
we were that dragon scaled goldfish shimmer,
we were the one leaping huge into the air

We were that floating fish
moonlight all over water and ground,
ancient river night hue,
we were that goldfish shimmer

religion means a willingness to be a fish
